TGS Acquires Apparition Geoservices for Simultaneous-Source Seismic Technology

TGS has acquired Apparition Geoservices to secure exclusive access to a simultaneous-source seismic acquisition technology that, in testing, improved operational efficiency by about 30 percent across ocean-bottom, towed-streamer and ultra-high-resolution surveys.

TGS, a global provider of energy data and intelligence, has acquired Apparition Geoservices GmbH, gaining exclusive access to a technology that lets marine seismic crews run multiple sound sources at the same time without the signals interfering. The company announced the deal from Oslo on 8 June 2026.

For offshore survey operators, the appeal is speed. In testing, TGS says the method delivered around a 30 percent gain in operational efficiency — meaning a vessel can cover the same survey area in less time, or more area in the same time.

What the technology does

Conventional marine seismic acquisition fires sound sources one at a time so that their reflections can be told apart. Apparition's simultaneous-source acquisition and separation method instead lets several sources fire together, using precise timing to "encode" each source so that overlapping signals can be separated cleanly during processing.

TGS links the method to two related developments in its portfolio: the Gemini Enhanced Frequency Source (EFS) and a Hexa Source configuration. Together, the company says, they improve low-frequency performance and recover a cleaner signal — which in turn improves visibility of deeper and more complex targets below the seabed.

Where it applies

TGS says the technology works across the main marine acquisition methods its customers use:

  • Ocean bottom node (OBN) surveys, where sensors are placed directly on the seabed;
  • Towed streamer surveys, where sensor cables are pulled behind the vessel;
  • Ultra-high-resolution 3D (UHR3D) surveys, used for detailed shallow imaging such as site characterisation.

The company says it has tested Apparition across these configurations over the past two years, including validation with key clients in marine environments, before integrating it into its acquisition and imaging workflows.

What is not disclosed

TGS did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, nor a specific commercial-availability date beyond describing planned integration into its acquisition and imaging workflows. The release also does not say what role Apparition's founders or team will take after the deal.

Why it matters for offshore teams

The following is interpretation, not part of the TGS announcement. Faster acquisition changes the shape of a survey project — fewer vessel days, tighter schedules, and a different balance of data volume against acquisition time. For teams that plan and report vessel-based operations, efficiency gains of the size TGS describes would, if they hold up in routine production, put even more weight on accurate timing and production records to show where the savings actually come from.
